Assignment # 1 (FWS212 – Spr 24-25)

Objective

Using the dataset provided (available on Blackboard), you will work in pairs to explore the data and create meaningful visualizations. The goal is to analyze the dataset, select key insights, and develop a visual story that helps communicate your findings.

report format

A 8-10 page report detailing the analysis, visualizations, and insights. 2. A Power BI file with visualizations.

The goal of this assignment is to transform the provided dataset into a compelling narrative by thoroughly exploring the data and curating a set of visualizations that effectively convey your key insights. Your analysis should demonstrate deep understanding, thoughtful visualization design, and clear justification for your choices.

Instructions:

  1. DatasetExploration:Objective: Gain an in-depth understanding of the dataset using PowerBI. You may create as many visualizations as necessary to gain an understanding of the data and identify patterns or trends.

    Actions:

    • Conduct a thorough exploration of the dataset. Create various visualizations (charts, graphs, tables, etc.) to examine data distributions, identify trends, detect outliers, and uncover any data quality issues (e.g., missing values).
    • Document key observations and insights. Consider aspects such as relationships between variables, data distribution patterns, and any anomalies.
  2. VisualizationSelection:
Objective: Select the most impactful visualizations that support your narrative. Actions:

    • From your exploration, choose exactly 10 visualizations that best represent the key insights you’ve identified.
    • Ensure each visualization is relevant and clear, and that it contributes meaningfully to your overall data story.
    • Visualizations can include bar charts, line graphs, scatter plots, pie charts, etc., but avoid including extra visuals that do not add value to the narrative.
  3. Justification&Storytelling:
Objective: Clearly explain the rationale behind each chosen visualization and howthey collectively build a coherent story.

    Actions:

• For each of the 10 visualizations, provide a detailed explanation in your report that includes:

o Insight:Whatspecifictrendorpatterndoesthisvisualizationhighlight?

o Rationale: Why was this particular type of visualization chosen over others?

o Contribution: How does this visualization support and enhance your overall narrative?

• Cohesion: Ensure that, together, all your justifications and visualizations come together to form a coherent story that clearly emerges from your insights.

4. Report Structure & Clarity:
Objective: Deliver a well-organized and professional report.

Structure: Your report (submitted in PDF format) should include the following sections:

o Introduction: Brief overview of the dataset and the objectives of your analysis.

o Dataset Exploration: Summary of your key findings from the initial exploration (only a brief description).

o Visualization Selection & Analysis: Presentation of the 10 selected visualizations with detailed justifications and insights.

o Conclusion: Recap of the overall insights and how the visualizations work together to tell your data story.

Presentation: Ensure that the report is clearly written, logically structured, and professionally formatted.

5. Submission Requirements:

  • Report (PDF format) – Include all your analysis, screenshots or embedded visualizations, and detailed explanations. The report should be between 8 to 10 pages long (with at least two visualizations on one page).
  • Power BI File (.pbix format) – Submit the Power BI file containing all visualizations. This file retains your entire Power BI report, including visualizations, data models, queries, and transformations.Note:

This assignment emphasizes storytelling through data. Avoid simply dumping all your visualizations; instead, focus on selecting those that best support your narrative and insights.

Late Submission Policy

The deadline for submission is 11:59 PM on the due date. Any submission made after this time, starting from 12:00 AM the next day, will result in a 2-mark deduction. An additional 2 marks will be deducted for each subsequent day. Assignments submitted more than four days late will not be accepted and will receive a zero, unless an extension has been approved in advance due to exceptional circumstances and approval from registration office is provided.
